Local: It seems that our antique friend Belinda is determined to rush into your columns again, to cry down the innocent amusements of society in general, and to demonstrate her "tongueativeness" in particular. Of course we can't shut her up she'd rather talk than' eat. We Piety Hill girls are rather anxious to get a glimpse of this Belinda. She must be a prematurely-antiquated old maiden of an age as uncertain as the derivation of her name, and who, having been disappointed in love if, indeed, the ennobling spark ever kindled in her now petrified heart now sours ou the world ami all the good things in it, aud relapses into au awful state of misanthropy. It is unnecessary to state that she is behind the times but still I'll state it.

She B'-cms to have inherited a full share of narrow-minded runtanical bigotry, and if things were carried on according to her apparent tastes, the condition of Salem society would to-day be similar to what it was in the Massachusetts Salem a couple of centuries ago: Wo should fine a man for kissing his wife on Sunday, should severely punisn any young man who dared to make love to auothtr man's daughter, without the old gent's consent, and we should cast into creek all persons who declined to think as we did; if they drowned without a struggle, we would maguanimouhly acquit them of the charge of witchcraft; if they attempted to regain the shore, the enlightened spectators would atone them to death. But the world moves, and we move with it, if Belinda don't. Poor creature She must resemble a crook-necked squash which has been through the Alden process. She resides in the vicinity of a dreary, gloomy grave-yaid, which fact seems to exert a strong influence over her ideas. Perhaps it were better, after all, that she should dwell in such close proximity to the aw tul presence of the silent tomb, for she is certainly too good, too lifeless for this gay and happy world of ours.

Poor thing I Life hag lost all its sunshine for her, and she falls back on her only amusement, swapping sewing-circle gossip at out us Piety Hill girls with her friend M. G. (Mother Goose), whom she mentioned in a former letter. So it is that every little action of ours is eargerly snapped up and enlarged upon no wonder that anything which happens in our town is spread all over the lot live minutes after its occurrence. Gossip, thou art a virtue Yea, verily.

Yes, Belinda, we enjoy the innocent amusement of dancing, and expect to reach heaven just as readily as though we didn't we promenade in God's pure air, and it does us good, as the roses on our cheeks will testily; we enjoy the society of the young men, and accept their escort to and from" church they like it, we like it, both sides lake it, and we propose to continue it. We admit that we read novels sometimes, and we uon't believe Belinda would dare to read one no doubt she finds her mental recreation ia the absorbing pages of Patent Officr I.eports, Congressional Globes, and such like hair-raising literature. But really, Belinda, yonr early piety has exerted too strong an influence over your ideas; you should bathe yonr leet iu wood ashes every night, remove the bunch of jute from your head, and allow your brain to cool ofi, after which you will find there is not half as much impropriety in the world as you seem to imagiue. If you think us Piety llii'l girls know nothing about domestic economy, just drop around some day and we'll bliow you we can cook a good square meal, and do many other useful things! as well as amuse ourselves. In conclusion, if you can't write your communications in plain English why don't write them at all.
