F. P. Salem, Oregon Oregon AMERICAN MAGAZINE A LEADER ITS PAGES FULL) OF FACT STORIES BEAUTIFULLY TOLD A MAGAZINE ALWAYS PIU-(iltESHIVE AND ALWAYS OPTI MISTIC. Ths penerfl excellence of The American Magazine Is what appeals to the reader. Experts In the business say that no periodical now published is attracting more attention, or winning more enthusiastic approval, than The American Magazine.

It is a publication which exhibits unusual energy, llvllness, candor, courage, and humor. No one who reads It can ever forget its distinctive qualities. It is as much of a "character" as exists anywhere and a most intelligent and delightful "character" too. One of the great achievements of The American Magazine is its contribution to national journalism through its Important and authoritative fact-articles, now running, by Ida M. Tar-bell, Ray Stannard Baker, A.

J. Nock and other' writers, all of whom are the ablest experts In the country In their special fields. Another remarkable characteristic of The American Magazine is the quality of Its fiction, plus the story quality that Is to be found In many of its articles. By this Is meant the fact that this particular periodical requires that many of Its most Important articles be told In story form. In this manner the pages of the whole magazine fairly teem with downright human Interest The facts are gathered and presented with the uiOBt scrupulous attention to truth, but in the presentation the art of story-telling Is summoned, and the result Is the finest quality of Journalism that exists that which both Informs exactly and entertalne wonderfully.

Not many Journalists of this rare double ability are strolling up and down the worlds yet several of them are in the exclusive employ of The American Magazine. Three great original departments have been created by The American Magazine People," "The Interpreter's House" and "The Pilgrim's Scrip." Any particular number of the magazine may contain a wonderful Action story, or a beautiful picture, or a great article that will Interest you more than these departments. And yet those famous departments form a great attraction In the periodical. They are always there filled to the brim with Ideas, emotions, and aspirations. There is a curious flavor in them singularly new, pleasing and genuine.

On the whole The American Magazine Is winning great favor because of Us sound tone of real optimism not silly, flat and fake optimism; but that optimism which is founded on the solid truth that you ought to do your Job well wherever you are, and that if yoi do do your job well, you will get some sort of reward for It here oa earth not necessarily money (which most of us foolishly use as the only, yardstick of success), but perhaps an Inner feeling of satisfaction which, If your skin Is not too tough, may be transferred and exhibited In a gentle face something de cent to look at, and not calculated to care all the affection out of those who come in daily contact with you. This la a poor and Inadequate statement which only partially covers the ground. It is only meant to be a sort of reflection on what seems to be the moving uplrlt back of The American Magazine, It Is nothing but an Impression which the writer feels after reading and enjoying The American Magazine for a year or more. Ialfon, a daring blrdman, and the Marquis Paulla were In LalTon's machine. They were trying for a prize of $20,000, offered for the fastest passenger (tight over the Paris-Brussels course. The machine had left the ground easily and circled once about the grounds ready to start on Its long flight. Just as It passed over LalTon's hangar and seemed about to shoot away on the Brussels course, the machine lurched violently. It is believed that tho stay of one of the wings gave way and that the aeroplane at once became unmanageable.

From the ground LalTon's efforts to right the machine were plainly visible. The light lasted only a few moments, however, and with another lurch the machine ducked toward the earth at the same time turning over. The two aviators stuck to their places for the first turn but were thrown out when the machine again swerved around and turned completely over for the second They struck the earth a fraction of a second before the machine, with its heavy engines, was dashed upon them. The little crowd gathered to watch the beginning of the flight, ruBhed forward and lifted the wrecked machine from the bodies of Its victims. The Marquis was placed in an an ambulance but died before reaching a hospital.

The story of an alleged attempt to grab 96,676 acres of land In Southern Oregon, valued at four millions pf dollars, by legal Juggling, is asserted In a com plaint today on file in the federal court. The defendant is the Southern Oregon company as successor to the Coos Ray Wagon Koad company. The endeavor on the part of the government to retain title to the property Is based on a provision in the original grant from the United States to the state of I Oregon, which stipulated that the sale of lands should be restricted to not over 160 acres to any one person. This provision, the Coos Bay Wagon Road company, as grantees of the state of Oregon, violated, the complaint alleges. According to the document, 96,676 ares of the original grant of 103,639 acres was sold to John Miller, who contracted to purchase the block, be acting as agent for Collis P.

Huntington; Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford and Mark Hopkins, all of California. This sale was made In 1875. In 1883 the Oregon-Southern Improvement company entered into negotiations for the purchase of the lands sold to Miller and later In the year the Boston Safe Deposit and Trust company took a moVtgage on the property. the lands passed Into the hands of J. Rotch and E.

D. Marshall on the alleged payment of $120,000. Then, according to the complaint, the land was conveyed to the South-Oregon company which was a re-organlaaton of the Oregon Southern Improvement company, the document asserts. The government alleges that the "alleged Indebtedness secured by the various mortgages were fictitious, feigned and untrue, and represented simply the Interest of the stockholders of the company and were executed and delivered and foreclosed with the Intent and In the hope that the restrictions upon the sale and disposition of the granted lands might be evaded and defeated and that the lands might be created Into an unconditional estate for the use and benefit of the stockholders of the Oregon Southern Improvement company. Our grandmothers understood the secret.

They wade sad used a "sage tea," and their dark, glosy hair long after middle life was due to this fact. Our mothers have gray hairs be fore they are fiftj, but they are beginning to appreciate the wisdom of our grandmothers in usin "sage tea" -for their hair, aud are fast following suit. The present generation has the advantage of the past in that it can get a ready to use preparation called Wyeth's Sage and Sulphur. As a scalp tonic and color restorer, this preparation Is vastly superior to the ordinary "sage tea" made by our grandmothers, and It can be bought for M) cents and $1 a bottle at almoKt any first-class drug store, or will be sent direct by the Wyeth Chemical Company, 7 Cortlandt New Yor City, upon receipt of price.
