364-7718 after 7 pm. 100 Display VZIILLD GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UPI) The government says eight antiwar activists intent on disrupting last summer's GOP convention huddled in the attic of an old house to learn how to "fry" marbles to shoot at Miami Beach police. Federal attorneys said marbles are "fried" by alternately heating and cooling them. This changes their composition, causing them to shatter like schrapnel when fired from a slingshot, prosecutors said.

The conspiracy trial of the "Gainesville Eight," now all members of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, enters its second week today. The eight men on trial are accused of plotting an attack on the 1972 Republican National Convention with five-man "fire teams" armed with such weapons as BB-coated cherry bombs, bows and arrows, Molotov cocktails, homemade explosives, and store-bought slingshots, the type hunters use to shoot rabbits, hidden in the crotch of their jeans. The defendants claim their trial is another White House "dirty trick." They say "agent hired by the Committee to Re-elect the President infiltrated their meetings to frame them and embarrass the VVAW. Judge Winston E. Arnow ordered the predominantly under-30 jury sequestered for the weekend, allowing them only brief meetings with their spouses and two cocktails a night.

In his opening remarks last week, assistant U.S. Attorney Jack Carrouth said he would prove, among other things, that a Gainesville clan of the VVAW ordered dozens of slingshots from a Nebraska firm. Later, he said, the weapons were put on the shelves of a Gainesville mod shop called the "Wang Dang Doodle" to make it appear they were there for sale. The government also claims that secret meetings were held in the attic of a two-story frame house on University Avenue where VVAW members were schooled in the use of crossbows and the manufacture of homemade ammunition, including the "fried" marbles. The agents say they were checking for "bugs" on government phones, but the defendants say the FBI was eavesdropping on them.
