The government arranged a nationally televised program from Parliament Hill tonight, including leading Canadian performers, the unfurling of a 145-foot Canadian flag and a giant fireworks display. Local celebrations also were planned across Canada, but not in Quebec.

Opening lead: Queen of IB I A Mr. and Mrs. Joe Black Sometimes a bird in the hand is not worth some number in the bush. A bird in the hand may be worth two in the bush, but one in the hand is certainly i not worth four others that can 'be caged. What's all this philosophy to do with a bridge hand? It can apply to the winning or refusing of tricks.

Look. over today's illuminating example to see what I mean. West leads the queen of hearts and declarer has a decision to make. If he takes his bird in the hand, he has six tricks outside the club suit and the fate of the contract rests with guessing which wav to finesse against the club queen. Let's assume that declarer snatches the heart king and then makes the winning guess in the club suit.

He clucks triumphantly, taking 11 tricks, and he mentions, "I always play for the queen to lie over the jack." Everything goes fine on today's hand. Partner is happy, the rubber is won and declarer posts a good score. But did he actually give the hand his best? He certainly did not and his fine score could have easily been a poor one. The correct way to play the hand is as follows. Duck the queen of hearts and allow West to win.

If West continues with the heart jack, win the heart king and finesse the clubs into East. If East has another heart, the defense can take only four tricks. In today's case, West will shift at trick two and South wins the lead in dummy. Now a first round club finesse is taken into the West hand with no possible danger. If West wins, he cannot attack the hearts, and if the finesse wins, dummy can lead another club to pick up nine sure tricks.

Top with a small sauce pan, inverted, and fish no more. I can't believe you really missed this one! An Old (Age 70) Admirer Well I must admit the old gray matter in my brain just wasn't working properly. From the number of people who wrote telling me the same thing, I must be the last person to know about using the little nylon bag to hold small items in my dishwasher.

Thanks heaps for cluing me in on your secret! -Heloise II Dear Heloise: During a period of very humid weather, I had trouble with my salt shakers. I have two salt shakers in my kitchen. One is the ceramic type that fills from the bottom and the other fills from the top and has a chrome top. Although I added rice to the chrome top shaker, not a drop of salt would come out. I observed that the ceramic shaker was work-ing beautifully.

I did some investigating and discovered that the condensation from the metal top of the one shak- er was causing the salt to 'become too damp. So if you have humid weather don't use a salt shaker with a metal top. ceramic shaker is best. Mrs. W.H.
