Statesman Journal OREGON July 27, 2006 Man with knife attacks woman at zoo The Associated Press PORTLAND A 32-yearold Portland woman suffered a slashed hand Wednesday when a knife-wielding man attacked her as she removed her two young children from a minivan at the Oregon Zoo, Portland police said. Jere Ryder, 49, a registered predatory sex offender, had approached the woman from behind, ordering her and the children back into the car, said Sgt. Brian Schmautz, a spokesman for the Portland Police Bureau. The victim fended off Ryder, getting the slash from the knife, and screamed, attracting the attention of construction workers at the World Forestry Center. Golden Funeral Service, Salem Marcelino A. Valdez May 31, 1949 July 25, 2006 SALEM A. Valdez, 57, died Tuesday, July 25th. He was born in Progresso, Texas. In 1989 he relocated his family to Oregon.

For many years he worked as a school bus driver for Gervais School District. Marcelino is survived by his wife, Norma of Salem; Son, Marcelino Jr; daughter-in-law Nicole Valdez; daughter, Leonor Valdez all of Salem; Grandkids Rafael Valdez, Mariah Valdez and Anthony Valdez, all of Salem; brother, Eduardo Valdez of Texas; Sisters, Minerva Martinez of Texas and Rosa Valdez of Salem; and an abundance of relatives. All Arrangements are by City View Funeral Home Eugene 'Gene' Clifford Westby April 30, 1947 July 25, 2006 SALEM Eugene 'Gene' Clifford Westby was born in Dallas, Oregon, on April 30, 1947, to Ebert and Eva (Hall) Westby. He attended school in Willamina where he met his wife, Patty Ingraham in the first grade love as a freshman in High School. He married Patty on May 13, 1967, in Witchita Falls, Texas, while serving his country in the United States Air Force. He earned a Bachelors Degree at OCE in Monmouth.

Gene was very entrepreneurial in spirit and owned and operated several businesses. Most recently, he was a salesman for RainSweet, Inc. He adored his grandchildren and his life revolved around them and their sports and hobbies. He loved Corvettes and owned 10 during his lifetime. He and Patty are members of the McNary Golf Club.

He is survived by his wife, of nearly 40 years, Patty; his mother-inlaw, Eleanor Ingraham of Willamina; his son and daughter-in-law, Tyler and Jennifer Westby; daughter, Kym Westby; and six grandchildren; Paul, James, Luke; Joel, Lakeyn, and Caitlyn, all of Salem, who lovingly called him, "Papa Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, July 30, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. at Salem Heights Church, 375 Madrona St. in Salem. Thompson of Oregon City, Kyrie O. Thompson of Portland, Jennifer Gonzalez (Powell) of Esparto, and Jonathan C. Thompson of Salem; and seven great-grandchildren: Kali and Miranda Powell, Derek and Travis Young, and Alyssa, Jennel, and Ashtin Gonzalez. George graduated from Anderson High School in 1936 and attended Anderson College and Indiana University. He served in the US Army Coast Artillery and the Quartermaster Corps during WWII.

Drafted in January 1941, he was discharged a Captain in January 1946. He participated in campaigns in the Solomon Islands. New Guinea, and the Philippines as well as the founding of the United Nations in San Francisco. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal and the Purple Heart. Following the war, he worked for the Department of Veterans Affairs in Indiana.

His family returned to California during the Korean War, where he worked for the California Farm Bureau and the Cal-Farm Insurance Company. He retired in 1983. George and Ellen moved to Salem Towne Retirement Village in 1986. George enjoyed travel and pickle ball, winning the Salem Towne 70 and over tournament for the fourth time in 2003. He was a student of history and genealogy, a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, AARP, a Master Mason, a Methodist, and a fourth generation Republican.

His family and friends greatly loved and respected him. May He Rest in Peace. Funeral service is Friday July 28 at 10:00 a.m. at Restlawn Funeral Home. Friends may view from 2-5 pm Thursda, July 27 at Restlawn Funeral Home.

SALEM George Frederick Thompson was born February 12, 1918, in Anderson, Indiana, to Wood and Rosie Thompson. He died July 25, 2006 of congestive heart failure. George is survived by his wife of sixty-five years, Ellen L.

Mr.

Smith was born Sept. 15, 1924 in Red Oak, Iowa to Robert and Florence Smith. He married Ruth Andrews on March 28, 1946 in Salem. During WWII Riley served in the Army. Some of the jobs he performed in his lifetime included: lumber grader, logger, welder, truck driver, purchasing agent, and car salesman.

He enjoyed hunting, ocean fishing, and water skiing. He was a member of the Salem First Baptist Church. He also taught 3rd and 8th grade Sunday School classes as well a as adult Sunday School. Survivors include wife, Ruth; two sons, Rex of Seattle, and Ryan of Redmond, four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by eight siblings.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, July 31 at HowellEdwards-Doerksen with Rigdon-Ransom Funeral Directors with burial at Macleay. Whitney was born on August 20, 1950 to Patrick and Margaret Whitney in Woodburn, Ore. He graduated from Gervais High School in 1973 and then married Sylvia Dominguez. He was a Sergeant for the National Guard and was employed by Blue Heron Company in Oregon City.

He had a love for the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, hunting, crabbing, gardening and sharing his outdoor experiences. Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; sons, Shawn and Scott all of Silverton; 5 grandchildren; and niece Tricia Logren of New York. A celebration of Life will be held at 3:00 pm, July 28 at Unger Funeral Chapel, Silverton. Chester W. Carbaugh January 5, 1927 July 26, 2006 Arrangements by Virgil T.

Golden Funeral Service. SALEM Chester W. Carbaugh passed away following a two month battle with liver cancer. Chester was born on January 5, 1927 in Gervais, Oregon to Harold and Agnes (Snyder) Carbaugh. Chester has resided in the Willamette Valley since 1927 and in Salem since 1950.

He married Darlene DeRouch on February 15, 1969 at St. Vincent's Catholic Church. Chester served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and after the war, worked in the Wood Products Industry for 40 years where he retired in June of 1994. Chester enjoyed 4-H and had been a livestock leader for 10 years.

He also had set up his Navy ship, LST 479, first reunion and had chaired several other reunions with the next one being held this October. Chester proudly gave oral history presentations about WW II to various high schools, and would wear his uniform to add that extra touch. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the VFW. He enjoyed travel and reading about history.

Survivor's include his wife Darlene; sons, Tony (Barb) Carbaugh of Turner, Mike (Kay) Carbaugh Mill City, Tim Carbaugh of Salem, Steve (Vera) Carbaugh of Salem; daughter, Susan (Tim) Peters of Salem; sisters, Dolores Bauer of Eugene and Donna Royse of Butte, Montana. 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 3 great-greatgrandchildren also survive. Visitation will be Thursday from 2:00 6:00 p.m. at Virgil T. Golden Funeral Service.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be Friday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church with interment at Belcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Father Taaffe Foundation, PO Box 47, Salem, OR 97308-0047, or to St. Joseph School Fund.

721 Chemeketa St Salem, OR 97301 Pamela M. Groff January 10, 1948 July 21, 2006 KEIZER Pamela M. Groff, 58, beloved wife and mother, passed away peacefully at home on the afternoon of July 21st after a yearlong battle with cancer. She will be missed deeply and loved always. The memorial service, a celebration of Pam's life, will be held at 3 p.m.

on the 30th of July at Salem Central Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1330 Summer Street N.E. in Salem. She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Groff; her parents, Harold and Leona Spohr of Woodburn; older sister, Cathie Winters and her husband Jerry of Bend; her identical twin sister, Pat Kuiper and her husband Dick of Las Vegas; son, Michael Booth and his wife Becky of Sherwood; step-son, Jeffrey Groff and his wife Sidin of Vancouver; and step-daughter, Janna Allison and her husband Curt of Vancouver. Pamela and her husband also have six grandchildren, Tyler Booth, Nathan Booth, Matthew Allison, Mitchell Allison, Aleana Hang and Izabella Groff. Although born in Seattle, Pamela was raised in S.E.

Portland and attended Centennial High School where she and her sisters were members of the Cheer Leading squad. After High School she attended Mt. Hood Community College. Pam worked for a number of years at the North Pacific Union Office of Seventh-day Adventists in Portland. Throughout her life Pam enjoyed hiking, boating and camping with her family and friends.

She and her husband moved to Boston, Mass. in 1991 where they lived and worked for over ten years. There she attended Eastern Nazarene College and graduated with honors. After her husband retired the couple moved back to Oregon to be near their parents, children and grandchildren. They settled in Keizer, Oregon in 2002 where Pam worked for the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley.

Pam has had a truly wonderful life, and with her loving spirit, touched the hearts of people wherever she went. She will be deeply missed and loved always. Helen Crannell January 18, 1915 July 18, 2006 SALEM Daughter of Peter and Hilda Kivinie mi Parvin, Helen was born January 18, 1915 in Hopewell, Ore. She was born in the family home and lived most of her life on the farm of her parents in Hopewell, moving to Salem five years ago. She attended school in Fairview and Amity, graduating in 1933.

Helen married Richard Crannell on January 1, 1937. Helen worked as an insurance clerk for Physicians Medical Center for 35 years, retiring in 1975. She enjoyed traveling, holidays, social gatherings, dancing and cooking. She is survived by her children, daughter Colleen Breuer of Salem and son Richard Crannell of Hopewell; 4 grandchildren, Ken Breuer of Vancouver, Kristin Breuer of Salem, Debbie Fred of Bend, and Melinda Crannell of Salem; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 greatgreat grandchildren; and her companion, Chuck Whyte. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard in 1980; brother, Matt; and granddaughter, Kathy.

Memorial Services: 2 p.m. July 31 at Hopewell Church. Interment: Hopewell Cemetery. Arrangements: Macy Son Funeral Directors. Nancy Davis May 8, 1956 July 24, 2006 KEIZER A fourth generation Oregonian, Nancy Kathlyn Davis was born to Roberta Vale and Alvin LeRoy Ebert in Corvallis.

She graduated from Corvallis High School in 1974 and from Oregon State University with a double major in clothing and textiles, as well as business in 1980. Ronald J. Davis and Nancy K. Davis were married Sept. 12, 1981, at Adair Clubhouse.

Nancy worked for a short time after graduation at Payless Drugstore in Salem and in the men's department for Macy's in California. After the children, Steve and Danielle, were born, she spent her time being a full time mother and homemaker. The family traveled the United States and Europe, living in Dusseldorf, Germany, for five years. Returning to the United States in 1992, they settled in Tracy, and the last three years in Keizer. Nancy has had Huntington disease for the last 12 years.

She was able to live at home until this year with the help of family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Ronald J. Davis, of Keizer; son Stephen D. Davis of Winters, Calif; daughter, Danielle R. A.

Davis of Tracy, sisters and brothers-inlaw Terry and John Easton of Vancouver, and Joanna Ebert and Chapman Stout of San Antonio, Texas; sister Linda Ebert; brother Orley Wade Ebert; and mother Roberta V. Bier of Corvallis. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 29, at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 1736 N.W. Dixon Corvallis.

Helen Beaver Tipton August 10, 1928 July 25, 2006 SALEM Helen was born on August 10, 1928 in New Boston, Ohio to parents, Harry C. and Lucy (Kerr) Boggs. She died in Salem on July 25, 2006. She has been a resident of Salem since 1996 previously residing in Columbus, Ohio. She enjoyed working in her yard.

She is survived by her son, Daniel Beaver and his wife, Ann of Salem; step-children, Nancy Fisher and her husband, Perry, and Robert Tipton; two grandchildren, Carolyn Swaab and her husband, Daniel of Seattle, and Matthew Beaver of Salem; and five step-grandchildren. Clifford 'Cliff' Jensen, 71, of Boulder City, Nevada passed away July 24, 2006 in Boulder City. He was born September 1, 1934 in Salem, Oregon to Harold and Gladys Jensen. Cliff lived most of his life in Salem. He and his wife Pat moved to Boulder City six years ago, after Cliff had retired. Cliff was a U.S.

Navy veteran, having served during the Korean War. He was a Shriner, a member of the T-34 Association, and a member of the Las Vegas chapter of the QBs. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gladys Jensen; and his sister, Joyce Hinkle. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Patricia Jensen; and his daughter, Linda Barber, both of Boulder City. No services are planned.
