Statesman Journal OREGON Wednesday, July 26, 2006 CLATSOP COUNTY Two boys, 4 and 5, are found after night lost in the woods They are thirsty and hungry but otherwise healthy BY SARAH SKIDMORE The Associated Press Two boys who spent the night lost in the woods with their dog were found Tuesday in good shape. The brothers Ethan Martin, 4, and Atticus Martin, 5 disappeared in the woods Monday morning at a family homestead in Clatsop County where their Portland family had been vacationing. After getting lost, the boys spent the night on the side of the road. They told their parents that their dog, a 10-month old Labrador retriever named Online extras For more news from around Oregon, go to StatesmanJournal.com and click on News. Rocco, circled them during the evening to protect them.

Rescue workers found the boys and the dog on a side road about three miles from the house more than 24 hours after they disappeared. The Clatsop County sheriff's office said the boys were muddy, thirsty and tired after their return. Andrea Kennet, a spokeswoman for the sheriff's office, said the boys were in good spirits. The boys said they knew they were lost and were trying to find their way home. When rescue workers found them, the boys were collecting wildflowers to give to their mother.

"This was the absolute best outcome," Kennet said. "Everyone from family to searchers were elated." About 90 people, search dogs and a helicopter from the Astoria U.S. Coast Guard Air Station looked for the youngsters. The farm east of Astoria is covered with several acres of dense forest, thick underbrush, gullies, swamps and ponds. The children were sent to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria for observation.

The parents, Christopher and Dawn Martin, said the children are prone to running off. "They know very much not to do it," their mother said. "But they are curious." Oregonians asked to conserve energy PacifiCorp makes plea to customers as demand rises The Associated Press PORTLAND With regional demand rising in the West and California suppliers straining to meet demand, an Oregon utility called on consumers Tuesday to help reduce energy consumption. "We're asking customers to try to conserve power as much as possible during peak hours, from noon to 8 p.m." said David Kvamme, a spokesman for PacifiCorp. Kvamme said the utility PORTLAND New exhibits help push zoo to 2nd-highest visitor mark The Associated Press It was the second-best year for attendance in the 119-year history of the Oregon Zoo.

The zoo announced Tuesday that attendance for the fiscal year that ended June 30 was 1,365,459, short of the record 1,367,940 visitors in fiscal 2000-01. Zoo Director Tony Vecchio credited the high attendance with good spring weather, along with the popularity of the zoo's new exhibits, camps, concerts and family events. "This year we had a beautiful spring," Vecchio said. "But I think what really made the difference was the return of the butterflies and the opening of the new Visayan warty pig exhibit. All pig species are cool and very popular, but these warty pigs may be the coolest pigs in the world." Brian Newman, a Metro councilor and Oregon Zoo Foundation board member, said the strong community support shows the success of the zoo programs.

Golden Funeral Service. Fred R. Lannigan December 4, 1915 July 22, 2006 SALEM Mr. Lannigan was Mable L. Milburn was asking customers to take such steps as setting thermostats between 78 and 85 degrees when out of the house, switching electricity use to off-peak hours in the morning and evening, and emptying and unplugging secondary refrigerators.

A spokesman for the other large utility in Oregon, Portland General Electric, said PGE supports customer conservation efforts this week but has not called for measures to reduce demand. "The system is certainly tight the past few days, but the load is easing up today, and things are looking better over the rest of the week," PGE spokesman Steve Corson said. In California, electricity managers said Tuesday's demand was expected to be nearly 10 percent above the usual for a summer day and 40 percent higher than during the state's 2001 power crisis. Although utility managers in Oregon said they had a cushion of power for the heat wave of the past weekend, seasonal demand on the electrical grid that covers the Western states tends to draw power to the south. Mike Hansen, a spokesman for the Bonneville Power Administration, said the agency delayed maintenance that would have reduced power generation.
