Rachel Hellesto Salem Municipal judge completes training Municipal judge Jane Aiken of Salem recently completed an advanced course from a national judicial resource center, officials said. The National Judicial College, a Reno-based forum for judicial education and professional development, offers courses for judiciary Aiken participated in a course called "Special Court Jurisdiction: Advanced," which covered topics such as Fourth Amendment issues, working effectively with court interpreters, creating an environment of fairness and impartiality, sentencing and recognizing addictive behavior. Ruth Liao Salem Warnings issued on booster seats Oregon drivers will be required to keep their children in booster seats for longer and have infant car seats facing to the rear beginning July 1. A bill was signed into law by Gov. Ted Kulongoski Tuesday. The law requires all infants must be placed in a rear-facing child seat until they are 1 year old and weigh 20 pounds. Children more than 20 pounds and more than 1 year old are required to be in a forward-facing child seat, with a weight limit which is not less than the child's weight.

Children more than 40 pounds are required to use a booster seat until they are 8 years old or 4 feet 9 inches tall. Not following the law is a class violation, which carries a fine of $97. Salem police officers will issue warnings only for this violation until Aug. 1 to allow people to purchase appropriate seats. Ruth Liao Salem Chemeketa leader takes over in August Cheryl Roberts will take over as president of Chemeketa Community College Aug. 20, according to an agreement approved by the college board of education Wednesday night. Craig Smith, vice president and chief financial officer, will serve as acting president from July 1 through Aug. 19, the board decided. Roberts, who will become the ninth president of the community college, most recently was vice president at South Seattle Community College.

She was selected after a national search. She succeeds Gretchen Schuette, who retires at the end of June after six years The contract with Roberts runs through Dec. 31, 2009. It is renewable for two years. Her salary will begin at $166,000 per year, including $6,000 per year in tax-deferred compensation.

Roberts also will receive a $9,000 per year expense account, and the college will provide her with a car and will pay all gas, insurance and maintenance. Tracy Loewon Jr. Pedee Bridge restoration work delayed The groundbreaking for the Ritner Creek Bridge restoration project, originally scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday will be postponed for about a month, the Polk County Public Works said Wednesday. The postponement of the project is due to owlets nested in the bridge.

The project and restoration work will begin once the owlets leave the nest.
