SCOREBOARD Page 2D Statesman Journal, Salem, Wednesday, April 7, 1993 Hockey Today's sports rocks stop BsM 330 pm At Milwaukee 113, Chicago 109 Blue Edwards scored 10 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Bucks defeat the Buls for the first time in four tries this season. The loss kept the Bulls one game behind New York, which lost at Atlanta, in the battle for best record in the Eastern Conference and homecourt advantage throughout the conference playoffs. Golden State 125, at San Antonio 111 Tim Hardaway scored 18 of his 30 points in the decisive third quarter, and Bitty Owens finished with 29 as the Warriors posted their third consecutive victory over the Spurs this season. Latrel Sprewel added 26 points for the injury-depleted Warriors, who lost their previous 10 games against teams with winning records. David Robinson scored 28 points for the Spurs, who tost for the ninth time in 37 home games this season.

San Antonio missed 15 free throws, including seven straight early in the fourth quarter. At Atlanta 109, New York 104 OT Mookie Blayfock made three free throws and found Duane Ferret for a layup in the final 12 seconds of overtime, lifting the Hawks. Atlanta snapped the Knicks' six-game winning streak and improved its overtime record to 3-0 this season. At Houston 114, LA. Clippers 101 Hakeem Olajuwon had a season-high 42 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as the Rockets took advantage of a 15-0 run in the second quarter.

At Orlando 116, Philadelphia 90 Shaquille O'Neal's 35 points and 16 rebounds helped the Magic break a three-game losing streak. The victory, combined with wins by Detroit and Indiana, kept the Magic tied with the Pistons and VA games behind the Pacers in the race for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. At Cleveland 115, Miami 100 The Cavaliers relied on their big men to beat the Heat, as Brad Daugherty scored 20 points in the first half and Larry Nance had 18 in the second. The Cavs won for the 1 5th time in their past 1 6 home games and kept the Heat winless in nine trips to Richfield. Indiana 98, at New Jersey 85 Reggie Miller scored 21 points, becoming Indiana's leading NBA scorer, and the Pacers snapped the Nets' eight-game home winning streak.

DerJef Schrempf added 26 points, 10 assists and The NBA's worst team beats the playoff-bound Sonics in Seattle. The Dallas Mavericks took a major step toward avoiding the worst record in NBA history. Jimmy Jackson and Derek Harper hit two free throws apiece Tuesday in the final 11 seconds, holding off the Seattle SuperSonics, 109-107. Jackson scored seven of his 18 points in the final period as the Mavericks improved their record to 8-64 with their first victory in Seattle since Nov. 14, 1989.

Dallas ended a five-game losing streak with their second victory in 45 games this season against a Western Conference opponent. The Mavericks' only other confer- ence win was Dec. 16 against the Los Angeles Lakers. The Sonics, who have the fourth-best record in the league and lost for the seventh time in 36 home games, led once as Dallas controlled the game. Ricky Pierce led the Sonics with 20 points.

The Sonics (49-23) were prepared to celebrate the fourth 50-win season in the franchise's history. Instead, the Mavericks need one more win to avoid the possibility of setting an NBA record for most losses in single season. The Philadelphia 76ers finished 9-73 in 1972-73. At Phoenix 115, LA. Laker 114 Dan Majerte's 40-foot shot at the buzzer his second 3-pointer in the final 11 seconds gave the Suns a victory.

Majerle, who had not scored since late in the third quarter until his first 3-pointer tied the score 112-112, leaped over the scorer's table to exchange high fives with spectators after his 40-footer. Shawn Kemp (top) and Gary Payton can't get a grip on the ball, and Seattle loses to allas. nine rebounds as the Pacers won for the seventh time in 11 games and remained ahead of Orlando, Miami and Detroit in the battle for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference. At Detroit 91, Washington 79 Joe Dumars stayed on a hot streak with 38 points, leading the Pistons. Dumars is averaging 37 points in the past three games, aft Pistons' victories.

Denver 101, at Sacramento 100 Robert Pack scored the final points of the game on a dunk with 1:10 left, and the Nuggets won when Walt Williams shot a 20-foot airball with two seconds left. The day before, the Blazers beat the Jazz in Utah. When Adelman got back to Portland, he was told about news reports that some of his players were being investigated for sexual misconduct in Salt Lake City. Minutes later, a television reporter was knocking on their door. The telephone rang constantly with other reporters asking about the allegations. In the next few weeks, Adelman had to deal with a scandal that threatened to split his team; help his wife, family, and Caitlin and Patrick; and worry about his own father, who underwent open-heart and everyone on her side of the family wanted the children to stay together.

The Adelmans received joint custody of Caitlin and Patrick, along with the family of Gary Fournier, Mary Kay Adelman's brother. "They needed a home," Adelman, 46, said. He has four children of his own. Geoff Petrie, the Blazers' senior vice president, said, There's a lot more to it than that. "Rick and his wife have given up a lot for what they believe in.

Their own kids are growing up, and they could have been looking forward to a time in their lives when they could spend more time together and on their own interests. "Now they're looking at being parents into their 60s. Some people would have said, surgery. "There was one thing after another," he said. "It's been a strange year.

"I can honestly say that having this other matter to deal with has made basketball seem less important. Of course, your job is important, but this is family." Adelman said Caitlin and Patrick have adjusted well to their new home and new life with a family they didn't know well. "It's been an adjustment for everyone, moving into different rooms for the other kids and learning how our family works for them," Adelman said. "I've been very proud of the way they've handled it and the way my own kids have accepted them." Patrice Boyer, 41, the only sister of Adel-man's wife, Mary Kay, died Dec. 16 on a freeway near Lake Elsinore, Calif.
