Page 2B Statesman Journal, Salem, Tuesday, April 7, 1992 MILESTONES Obituaries James R. Lyles Jr. July 31, 1914 -April 8, 1992 Dr. James R. Lyles 77, of Salem died Monday in Mount Angel.

He was born in Stoneboro, S.C. He graduated from Wofford College in Viola W.Vinson Aug. 1,1914 -April 4, 1992 NEWBERG Violu Wren Vinson, 77, died Saturday. She was born in Granite Falls, and moved to Oregon when she was a small child. She attended schools in Tillamook and Newberg.

She married Cletus O. VinBon ion April 24, 1936, in McMinnville. They lived in Newberg. She worked for Northwest Nut Growers and Norpac in Portland and Dundee for 23 years until retiring in the late 1970s. She was a member of the Neighborhood Circle Club and the Assembly of God.

She enjoyed baking pies and mailing cards to shut-ins. Survivors include her husband; son, Jerry of Beaverton; sister, Jeane Huff of Bay City; three grandchildren; and five greatgrandchildren. Services will begin at 11 a.m. today in the church Graveside services with crypt entombment will follow in Valley View Memorial Park Mausoleum. Arrangements are by Attrell's Newberg mortuary.

Contributions may be made to the church or the American Lung Association. SJ, 4792 Milton H. Kroeker July 13, 1918 -April 3, 1992 YUBA CITY, Calif. Milton H. Kroeker, 73, formerly of Dallas, died Friday.

A businessman, he owned his own applicance business and most recently Woodburners of Calif. Survivors include his wife, Bon-nyne M. of Yuba City; brothers, Dr. E. Paul Wedel and Col.

Harold W. Wedel, both of Salem, Lee KroekV of William A. Laurich May 19, 1918 -April 6, 1992 William A. Launch, 73, of Salem died Monday. He was born in Joliet, 111., and served in the Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1963 as an electronics technician.

He moved to Willamina in 1963 and to Salem in 1975. He married Olu M. Ruy in 1947 in San Francisco. She died in 1990. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve.

Survivors include his daughters, Everetta Arbogast of Portland, and Linda Sue Sieroslawski of Salem; sons, Lonnie Laurich of Medford, Robin Smith of McMinnville, Eric Laurich of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Roger Laurich of Chicago; brother, Ed of Waldport; sister, Helen Burke of Illinois; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Services will begin at 10 a.m. Thursday in Rigdon-Ransom mortuary. Concluding services and interment will follow in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Visiting hours will be from 10 a.m to 8 p.m.

5, 1898 -April 5, 1992 KEIZER Elmina Mary Green, 93, died Sunday in Salem. She was born in Chapeau, Quebec. She graduated from Bellview Hospital nursing school in 1923 in New York and lived in Dallas before moving to Keizer. Her husband, Stewart M. Green, died in 1956.

She was a school teacher in her Michael R. Flemate Feb. 3, 1945 -April 4,1992 BEAVERTON Michael R. Flemate, 47, died Saturday. He was born and raised in San Jose, and graduated in 1962 from James Lick High School.

In 1987 he moved to the McMinnville-Lafayette area and recently Bettled in Beaverton. He married Judith Anne Flemate on Sept. 18, 1977, in Lake Tahoe, Calif. After high school graduation he worked at Smith and East Bay Gunite in San Jose. He also was a carpenter for Webcor Construction for several years.

Ho loved sports, especially the San Francisco 49ers. He is survived by his wife; sons, David of Florida, and Michael of Hol-lister, Calif; stepsons, Douglas Dal-ton of San Jose, and Michael Dalton of Lynnwood, daughters, Michelle, Adrianna and Dawn Flemate, all of San Jose; stepdaughter, Michele Caruso of San Jose; mother, Rita Blanco of McMinnville; brothers, Jesse and Aaron Martinez, both of McMinnville; sisters, Virginia Schell of Lafayette, Teresa Battisti of Salem, and Gloria Autra of San Jose; and five grandchildren. Graveside services will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Evergreen Memorial Park, McMinnville. SJ.

4792 Susan E. Brentano Dec. 17. 1896 April 6, 1992 McMINNVILLE Susan E. Brentano, 95, died Monday in McMinnville.

She was bom in Sheridan. To attend school before moving to McMinnville in 1910, she rode a horse from Sheridan to Willamina where she caught the Red Electric Train to McMinnville. She farmed for many years and worked at Willamette Valley Walnuts beginnning in 1955, doing various jobs and taking care of machinery. She retired in 1982. She also cared for many ill people.

She married Joseph Brentano on Jan. 9, 1918, in McMinnville. He died in 1967. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church.

She was one of Yamhill County's oldest living natives and was baptized by the Rev. Croquet at Grand Ronde in June 1897. Survivors include her son, Bud of McMinnville; daughters, Dorothy Rasmussen of McMinnville, and Clara Wirth of Yamhill; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and five great-greatgrandchildren. Vigil services will begin at 7 tonight in the church. Services will begin at 11 a.m.

Wednesday in the church. Vault interment will be in St. James Catholic Cemetery. Arrangements are by Macy Son mortuary. SJ, 4792 South Carolina in 19.1.1 ana re 1933 and ceived a doctorate in education from Duke University in 1951, He also was an Army veteran of World War II.

He married Marilynn E. Payne on March 9, 1946. He was the assistant superintendent in charge of instruction for city schools in Charlotte, N.C., from 1951 to 1956. He came to Willamette University in 1956 and retired in 1979 as head of the Education Department. He was listed in Who's Who in America College and University Administrators in 1970 to 1971 and in Marquis Who's Who in 1958 to 1959.

He was a member of Phi Delta Kappa and First United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife; sons, James R. Ill of Tacoma, and David L. of Portland; daughters, Elaine L. Zaiger of Klamath Falls, and Marianne R.

Lyles of Tigard; brother, Joseph H. of Hampton, sisters, Ellen Lyles and Margaret Weldon, both of Greensboro, N.C.; and three grandchildren. Memorial services will begin at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in the church. Private interment will be at Belcrest Memorial Park.

Contributions may be made to Willamette University, Jim Lyles Memorial Fund, 900 State Salem 97301. Arrangements are by Virgil T. Golden mortuary. SJ, 4792 Harry F. Needham July 29, 1908 April 6, 1992 Harry F.

Needham, 83, of Salem died Monday. He was born in Milford, and moved to Salem in 1919. He married Helen Needham on Jan. 1, 1939, in Salem. He worked for Cherry City Bakery and Master Bread in Salem.

In Dallas, he owned and operated the Ideal Cafe and the Dairy Queen until retiring. He was a member of First Christian Church. He is survived by his wife; son, Dennis of Monmouth; daughters, Tamara Colgan and Beverly Benson, both of Salem; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In keeping with his wishes no services will be held, and interment will be private. Contributions may be made to the church.

Arrangements are by Unger mortuary, Silverton. SJ, 4792 X3k Douglas Paul James Feb. 6, 1936 -April 5, 1992 ALBANY Douglas Paul James, 56, died Sunday in his home. He was born in North Hollywood, Calif. He moved to Eugene when he was 12 and to Albany in 1955.

He married Mona Roth on Sept. 3, 1955, in Albany. He was a Korean War veteran and later a paint line operator for Du-raflake. He was a member of the Albany Elks and Eagles lodges. His hobbies were gardening and fishing.

He is survived by his wife; sons, Monty of Albany, and David of Beaverton; daughter, Lori Grimes of SnohomiHh, brothers, Allen of Troutdale, and Gilbert of Salem; mother, Helen of Eugene; and four grandchildren. Visiting will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Fisher mortuary. Services will begin at 2 p.m. Thursday in the mortuary.

Contributions may be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society. SJ, 4792 Melvin B. Rhymer March 16, 1905 April 6, 1992 CANBY Melvin Baxter Rhymer, 87, died Monday in Oregon City. A native of Alexander, N.C., he lived in California and The Dalles before moving to Canby three years ago. He married Helen Mamie Dale Blue on July 25, 1931; she died in 1981.

He was an automobile mechanic. He was a member of Harvest Field Faith and enjoyed fishing and watching game shows. He is survived by his sons, Melvin of jjarstow, Arthur of Hender-sork Texas, and Charles of Lincoln Cjt; daughter, Helen R. Starr of Sublimity; 12 grandchildren; and 28 grgat-grandchildren. Funeral services will begin at 2 pim.

Saturday in Cornwel) mortuary, Wpodburn. Interment will be private. SJ. 4792 Lester 'Lyle' Kirkwood Dec. 7, 1912 April 5, 1992 WILLAMINA Lester "Lyle" Kirkwood, 79, died Sunday in Sheridan.

He was born in Hopewell and lived Willamina before settling in Amity in the 1940s. He was a logger and lived in a variety of logging camps. He married Iva Fronk on May 24, 1935, in McMinnville. He was a member of Oregon Trappers Association and loved to trap and fish. He is survived by his wife; daughter, Yvonne Schuetze of Willamina; sisters, Maxine Shields of McMinnville, Thelma Cornelison of ville, and Jeannette Aldridge of Newberg; mother, Florence Kirkwood of Sheridan; four grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

4792 Pamela Sue Prock Dec. 30, 1945 April 2, 1992 BEVERLY, Mass. Pamela Sue Prock, 46, formerly of Sulem, died Thursday at home. She wus raised in Salem and attended North Salem High School. She later attended the University of Oregon and the University of California at Berkeley, where she received a bachelor of arts degree in 1906.

After college, she moved to Seattle where she met and married Godfrey Perrott. In Seattle she also earned a master's degree in business administration from the University of Washington and later earned her certified public accountant license. She worked for Milliman Robertson Inc. and then Pan American Airlines until 1987 when she moved to the East. Survivors include her husband; stepsons, Gordon Perrott and Michael Perrott; mother, Freda Harris of Sulem; and brother, Thomas Prock of Bend.

Private family services will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday in the First Baptist Church, Salem. Contributions may be made to the church library. SJ, 47A2 John H. Ritchey Aug.

22, 1909 April 4, 1992 ALSEA John Henry Ritchey, 82, died Saturday at home. He was born in Eldorado Springs, and married Lena Ethel Garland on March 16, 1929, in Nevada, Mo. They worked in a powder plant in Kansas during World War II. They moved to Alsea in 1945. He was a logger -in the Alsea Valley for 35 years and a bus driver and custodian for the Alsea School District for 15 years.

He retired in 1971. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. Survivors include his wife; son, John Jr. of Alsea; daughters, Evelyn Hanson, Joan Pellett and Joyce Hildebrand, all of Alsea; sister, Dorothy Bledshaw of Kansas City, 13 grandchildren, 18 greatgrandchildren; and one great-greatgrandchild. Graveside services will begin -at 2 p.m.

Wednesday in Alsea Cemetery. Visiting will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today in McHenry mortuary in Cor-vallis. Contributions may be made to the Alsea School District in care of the mortuary.

22, 1 899 April 5, 1 992 McMINNVILLE Elizabeth c. Adams, 93, died Sunday. She was born in Bull Run. She was raised in Portland and was in the first graduating class at Franklin High School. She later moved to McMinnville.

She married Phillip Adams on Oct. 16, 1920, in Stevenson, he died in 1975. She worked for Western Union and also was a clerk at a variety store. She was a member of Sellwood Garden Club and St. Agatha Altar Society in Portland.

She also was a member of St. James Catholic Church. She is survived by her daughters, Kathlyn Kocher of Portland, and Patricia Taylor of McMinnville; five grandchildren; and eight greatgrandchildren. Private family services will be held. Contributions may be made to St.

Mary's of the Valley Building Fund in care of Macy Son mortuary. SJ, 4792 Janet Hibbs March 1, 1921 April 4, 1992 CORVALLIS Janet Louise Hibbs, 71, died Saturday. She was born in Elwood, graduated from Elwood High School in 1937 and taught in rural grade schools for three years. She married Charles H. Hibbs on Aug.

17, 1940, in Stevenson, Wash. They lived in Dallas until moving to Valsetz in 1946. In 1948 they moved to Corvallis. She was secretary-treasurer of Tri-W Lumber Sales Co. before becoming president in 1985.

She was a member and past president of Altrusa International Club. She was a member and treasurer of the First Congregational Church. She was a Cub Scout den mother and a Girl Scout leader. Survivors include her husband; sons, Charles Jr. of Portland, James of Corvallis, and Greg of Newport; daughter, Debra Parrish of Portland; sister, Phyllis Cox of Ogallala, brother, Spencer Decker of Gothenburg, and three grandchildren.

Memorial services will begin at 3 p.m. Friday in the church. Private interment will be in Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. Visiting will be from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in McHenry mortuary.

Contributions may be made to the church in care of the mortuary. SJ, 4792 Alton J. Bjornethun June 24, 1914 -April 5, 1992 LEBANON Alton J. Bjornethun, 77, died Sunday in Lebanon. He was born in Verona, Wis.

He married Lucinda King in 1942 in Las Vegas, Nev. He served in the Air Force during World War II, and after his discharge moved to California, where he worked for the California Division of Highways in Placerville. He moved to Lebanon in 1989. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. Survivors include his wife; son, Larry of Lebanon; brothers, Mario of Madison, Robert of Washington, D.C., and Carl of Placerville; and sister, Melvina Brown of Phoenix, Ariz.

6, 1 925 April 6, 1 992 STAYTON Clarence "Shorty-Williams, 67, died Monday in Salem. He was born in Calipatria, and lived most of his life in the Stay-ton area. He served in the Army during World War II. He married Valetta Sandner on Sept. 17, 1946, in Naches, Wash.

She died in 1989. He worked at Chevron in Stayton for 20 years beore owning and operating the Chevron station in Mill City for three years. He enjoyed gardening and going to dirt track car races in Lebanon. Survivors include his daughters, Rose Winters of Stayton, and Anita Strouse of Lebanon; sons, Clarence L. of Visalia, Garry of Salem, and Larry of Sublimity; sisters, Helen Flannery of Portland, and Georgia Mae Cruthers of Washougal, 14 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Quinn, 74, of Salem died Monday. A native of Elk Point, S.D., he moved to Salem in 1952. He was a member of the Salem Elks Lodge 336, the Vintage Chevrolet Club and St. Joseph Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, Mabel, whom he married April 15, 1938, in Salem; sons, James of Milwaukie, Donald of Mission Viejo, Steven of Kailua, Hawaii, and Charles of Redmond, mother, Frances Quinn of Mount Angel; 11 grandchildren; and two greatgrandchildren.

Snyder Aug. 3, 1907 -April 4, 1992 Alice J. Snyder, 84, of Salem died Saturday. She was born in Powell, and taught school in Jackson County, until she married Lowell Snyder in 1928. They moved to Toledo in 1938 and opened Snyder's Market, which they operated for 18 years.

They retired and moved to Lincoln City. Her husband died in 1968, and she moved to Salem. She was active in restoration projects at Deepwood Estate and was an avid gardener. Survivors include her daughters, Ann Tilden of Portland, and Christine Snyder of Salem; son, Mark L. of Depoe Bay; and four grandchildren.

IGOLDEN June 26, 1909 April 4, 1992 KEIZER At her request, no services will be held for Tempe Stewart Hunt, 82, who died Saturday in Sherwood Park Nursing Facility. She was born in Warren County, N.C., and married Banjamin F. Hunt on Aug.

11, 1928. He died in 1976. She moved from Ohio to Salem 15 years ago. Survivors include her daughters, Sally C. Densmore of Medford, and Elizabeth H.

Geltz of Salem; brother, A.T. Stewart of Washington, N.C.; sisters, Helen Gregory of Atlanta, and Julia Chaffin of Akron, Ohio; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Arrangements are by Rigdon-Ransom mortuary in Salem. Contributions may be made to Alzheimer's Association, Mid-Willamette Chapter, P.O. Box 4101, Salem 97302-8101.

SJ, 4792 Dorothy A. Ely Nov. 5, 1906 -April 6, 1992 Dorothy A. Ely, 85, of Salem died Monday. Services are pending with Howell-Edwards-Doerksen mortuary.

SJ, 4792 Delia Brown Dec. 24, 1912 April 4, 1992 SWEET HOME Delia L. Brown, 79, died Saturday in Corvallis. She was born in Jamestown, N.D., and moved to Salem in 1923 from Ohio. She lived in Lebanon before settling in Sweet Home in the mid-19408.

She married R. Keith Brown in September 1940 in Lebanon; he died Aug. 6, 1958. She worked at Groves Hardware in Lebanon and was a waitress at the Spring Restaurant for several years in Sweet Home. She was last employed for 16 years at White's Electronics.

She was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America and the Spicer Birthday Club. She also loved to work outdoors. She is survived by her brother, Bill Cook of Corvallis; sisters, Esther Merritt of Corvallis, Anna M. Sherwood of Lyons, and Irene Pritchett of McLoud, Okla. Visiting will be from 10 a.m.

to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Huston mortuary, Lebanon. Graveside services will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Lebanon Odd Fellows Cemetery. Memorial services will be held later in Sweet Home.
