This time he also has strong characters. De Niro, though grossly underutilized, takes over the film in his few brief appearances. The movie really belongs to Connery, who exemplifies thtv strength, humor and character of the unstoppable crime fighters.

Costner is tine, if a bit flat as a personality. Charles Martin Smith brings a comic edge to an acoun-tant turned crimefighter and Andy Garcia is the cool, tough cop. The Untouchables also has a period flavor: the feeling of a boisterous, proud city during the '30s. Ennio Morricone's film score also lends an operatic gravity to the story. There is violence scattered throughout the film, violence against both good and bad characters.

De Palma's camera turns away from the gorier episodes, although it lingers enough to make them memorable. The flaws here include an awkward western sequence and a rather smug attitude about the idealistic crimefighters of the '30s. Aside from that, this is powerful adult entertainment with the edge of film art. The Untouchables, produced by Art Linaon, directed by Brian De Palma, written by David Mamet. De Palma stamps his craft on every frame, from an eerie opening shot of crime lord Al Capone (Robert De Niro) to a tense, slow-motion shoot-out on the stairs of a train station. Television was never like this. David Mamet's literate script gives the story an intelligence, and a focus to match its images.

Kevin Costner portrays Nsss as a youthful idealist. Initially humiliated in the corrupt Chicago environment, Ness is inspired by a tough Irish cop (Sean Connery) to unflinchingly fight the arrogant Capone on his own violent terms.
