Attendance 800. twice earlier this season. Davidson, a freshman, led Chemeketa's scoring with 17 points and 12 rebounds, while teammate Eric Bailey backed him up with 10 points. Mark Leader and Joe Nichols were the leading scorers for SWOCC with 27 and 19, respectively. Chemeketa, which lost to Southern Idaho Friday night, finished third in the tournament.

Chemeketa, now finished with its basketball season, ended with a 10-6 league record and 20-11 season record. TWIN FALLS, Idaho Chemeketa Community College's Roger Davidson sank two free throws and teammate Rick Coxen made a key steal in the last few seconds of the game to send the Chiefs to a 61-59 win over Southwestern Oregon in regional basketball playoffs here. The score was tied at 59 when Davidson was fouled and tossed in the winning points. Coxen then foiled an SWOCC attempt to put up the ball again with the second of his two steals in the half. Chemeketa had been beaten by SWOCC t- 1 N.

Adelman, in his second year as basketball boss at Chemeketa, has steered the Chiefs to two plateaus -the best record (19-10) in the Salem school's decade of competing in the Oregon Community College Athletic Association and first time in the regional playoffs, which began Saturday.

There's a third plateau, an intangible. For the first time, Chemeketa 's students are aware that basketball is a part of college life on the school's campus where the only name of the game has been learning how to be a plumber, an electrician, an automobile mechanic or any other trade worth its salt. Cheme-keta's academic reputation ranks high. And well it should. But, thanks to Adelman, who wears two hats at Chemeketa, more and more are discovering that watching basketball on the community college level is a welcome change of pace in a pressure-packed college life.

Adelman's title when he isn't coaching basketball is articulation specialist. That's a fancy name for a public relations job, one of selling the school's advantages to high school graduates looking for. a way to prepare for making a living. "It's difficult to do both," Adelman admits. But he has no regrets.

"I have had a job in mind that combines coaching and academics" since he graduated from Loyola in Los Angeles in the late '60s. Adelman gives his wife, Mary Kay, an assist. "It (the last two years) would have been impossible without an understanding wife." But academics had to wait for professional basketball. Adelman, a guard, played for five teams in seven years, the longest stint (three years) with the Portland Trail Blazers. Adelman was a charter member of the Blazers in 1970, along with Geoff Petrie and other players long since forgotten.

He played for two years for the San Diego Conquistadors of the now-defunct American Basketball Association before moving to Portland. After Portland, it was one year with the Chicago Bulls and another year divided between New Orleans and Kansas City. After pro basketball became more moving than playing, he took a job with the Converse Rubber Co. in promotion and sales. After a year with Converse, Chemeketa recruited Adelman.

And now the relationship is one of mutual admiration. Adelman is the first to admit that the transition from playing to coaching basketball wasn't easy. "I made a lot of mistakes my first year (at Chemeketa)," he said. The honest self-appraisal tells a lot about the man, although the "mistakes" didn't preclude a winning season (14-12) his first time out with a clipboard. And, if there were mistakes, Adelman and Chemeketa profited.

"The two most important things I learned," a more-relaxed Adelman said as he watched his athletes in a shooting drill at the Salem Armory, Che-; meketa's basketball home, "have been in organiza-; tion and relating to the players. "With no (basketball) facilities on the campus, isn't enough time to get everything accom-' plished some players need individual attention and I hope (next season) to add an hour in the morn- ing, working basically on just fundamentals of the game." Adelman said "players have to be motivated; there has be togetherness between player and coach, particularly after close losses" that can be damaging in the frustration that follows. At least half of Chemeketa's losses were close. Five of its league setbacks were by a point or two. "This group didn't quit.

made me realize how important it is to keep the interest high and come back strong after a close loss. "You can draw all the X's and O's on the blackboard you want to," Adelman said, "but if a team is not ready to play, it isn't going to happen." It made the season's hard work all worthwhile.

"We handled them," Adelman said, "because the kids showed character they were two points behind with nine minutes to go and scored the next six points with two steals and a rebound and fast break basket. I knew right then that we were in charge." Even more satisfying to Adelman than the basketball skills his players have picked up is "the enthusiasm the team has brought to the campus. "The fans feel it and we've gained respect (in the league) no longer are we looked on as an easy game." Coaching, Adelman said he has learned, "is motivating, developing and inspiring I've seen it happen," he added. All these intangibles come alive when applied to the Chiefs' comeback when the chances were slim they would fulfill a pre-season goal of qualifying for the regional tournament. A case in point: Four of Chemeketa's six conference losses in the regular season were to Umpqua and Linn-Benton, two to each.

And it was the same two teams the Chiefs defeated on the way to Idaho. And it happened away from the Armory in Rose-burg and Albany. Mary Kay's life, from September to March, has been basketball and three busy children Kathy 7, R.J. 5, and Laura 2. Maybe Chemeketa's 1978-79 season makes the life of the basketball widow a little brighter.

Mary Kay and the little Adelmans are Rick's loudest cheerleaders. And Adelman has matured as a coach. He can now afford the luxury of a smile. He has found the defense against frustration.
