Basks Drive Set in Glory By Young Politicos (C) New York Times News Service CLEVELAND, Ohio The Young Socialists Alliance, claiming to represent the most radical and bestorganized college and high school youth in the nation, concluded: a convention here Sunday calling for massive peaceful demonstrations on popular issues. About 1,200 youths from every section of the country participated in the four-day convention highlighted by a Saturday rally featuring Socialist worker party presidential candidate Linda Jenness and vice presidential candidate Andrew Pulley. Spokesmen said $7,000 was collected at the rally to send Young Socialist Alliance missionaries to college campuses and high schools throughout the country this spring to recruit new chapters and membership. THE CHAPTERS will be instructed to follow the guidelines adopted at the convention. Simply stated, those guidelines are instructions for members to participate in the popular movements and recruit new members from the ranks of those movements.

Specifically, the guidelines support the movements for complete U.S. withdrawal from Southeast Asia, black, chicano and women's liberation and an end to government wage and price controls. At no place in the guidelines is there a call for illegal or violent protest. Instead, members were urged to run for local, state and national elections in an effort to win space for propaganda in the newspapers and time on the air. If elected, a prospect even the most avid Socialist here discounts, the candidates are told to use their office for the organization of the popular movements.

The guidelines were adopted in an air of realism which recognized that the expected signing of the Vietnam peace terms would take much of the mass popular appeal out of the antiwar demonstrations. BUT THE YSA leaders see an increase in the black, Chicano and especially the women's liberation movements. According to registration figures, the Young Socialists were having the most success recruiting members from the antiwar and women's liberation movements and the least success recruiting blacks and Chicanos. The registration showed 827 of the 1,200 delegates were active in either antiwar or women's liberation movements while only 15 delegates were active in black liberation movement and none was involved in the Chicano movement. The registration figures also showed that New York state had the highest number in attendance with 244 youths.

Ohio was second with 162 and California third with 92. There was also a sprinkling of representation from the Southern states, including Tennessee, Alabama, and Georgia. Texas had 46 representatives at the convention. In all, 36 states were represented with the heaviest attendance from those states in the East and Midwest. The West Coast, including California, Oregon and Washington, claimed about 10 per cent of those attending the convention.

Only 53 of those in attendance were over 30 years old while 354 were between the ages of 19 and 21 and 155 were under 19. Registration showed that 150 college campuses were represented.
