Thursday: Cross Country Friday: Volleyball Today: Boys soccer Sunday: Girls soccer Tuesday: Football By Bill Poehler I Statesman Journal WOODBURN Michael Hobson's position on the soccer field is unclassifiable. At times the Woodburn High School junior is a forward and a good one: He scored nine goals this season and had three assists. The rest of the time he's a defender, using his raw speed to track down opposing attackers and take the ball away.

Wherever Hobson is on the field, he makes an impact on the game. For his efforts, Hobson is the Statesman Journal All-Mid-Valley boys soccer player of the year. "My official position, I don't think I really have one," Hobson said. "It's just wherever they need me to play." For the record, Hobson is listed as a forward, but try telling that to his opponents. Woodburn scored significantly fewer goals this year (60) than the year before (89), but the team won the state championship for a third time.

Hobson was a big part of that: When he needed to score, he would go forward and score, and when his team needed defense, he would drop back and play in the back. He scored one goal in each of the past two state championship matches and his play has been critical in the Bulldogs' con tinued team success. "You just don't think it's going to happen and then it happens again you're like, what?" Hobson said. "I helped win the first one and the second one and the third one so just to share that with people is pretty amazing. Hobson's parents, Thomas and Annette, both graduated from Woodburn.

Thomas Hobson was a senior on Woodburn's 1986 boys soccer team that won its league championship and made the state playoffs for the first time. Hobson's family lived in Mt. Angel when he was born, but soon moved back to Wood-burn when he was 4 and he started playing soccer soon after. "That's just the main sport," Hobson said. "I grew to love it, too.

I used to play baseball; I did not like baseball. I played basketball; I did not like baksetball. Soccer grew on me because my dad did it, but everyone else did it, too. "In recess, everyone's playing soccer, no one's playing football, no one's playing basketball. Everyone's playing soccer.
